The Ewhurst Village Club, initially established in 1901, has been a cornerstone of the local community for over a century. Its rich history reflects the evolution of village life, adapting to the needs of the community whilst maintaining a welcoming atmosphere that has fostered connections amongst residents of all ages.
The club began as a reading room and institute, aiming to improve literacy and provide a greater standard of education to local men, later expanding after World War I to accommodate the growing community. From 1925, it was leased to the YMCA, to tackle unemployment amongst ex-servicemen. During World War II, the building took on a new role, functioning as a canteen and temporary school for evacuees, establishing its position as a beacon of support during challenging times.
After the war, the club became a British Legion venue until 1959, when it transformed into a Working Men’s Club affiliated with the Club and Institute Union (CIU). The club initially rented its premises, but in 1984, it was able to purchase the building outright. The proceeds from the sale were dedicated to the Ewhurst Charity, which provides grants for educational purposes, solidifying the club's commitment to supporting local initiatives.
In 1913, a rifle range was added, which was later modernised in 1983 to meet the needs of club members. Throughout its history, Ewhurst Village Club has evolved from a traditional working men’s club to a vibrant family-friendly venue. Today, it strives to create an inclusive environment for all Ewhurst residents. In recent years the club has attracted a strong following of snooker players who regularly use the two full-sized tables, in the infamous snooker room. The annual treasure hunt has gained legendary status within the village, providing young families a day of affordable fun and adventure. Regular music events and quizzes further fill the club’s calendar of offerings, ensuring there is something for everyone.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed a significant challenge, but the club's dedication to community spirit shone through. Several members stepped up to deliver real ale to villagers' doorsteps, helping to maintain connections and lift spirits during a difficult time. This gesture of kindness exemplifies the club's mission to support and uplift all Ewhurst residents. As a non-profit organization, Ewhurst Village Club focuses on giving back to the community, supporting local charities, schools, and organisations. Its primary goal remains to provide a friendly environment where villagers can gather, socialise, and find companionship.
Ewhurst Village Club is more than just a recreational venue; it is a vital part of the community fabric in Ewhurst. Its rich history, commitment to inclusivity, and ongoing support for local initiatives make it a cherished cornerstone of the community. Whether you're a long-time member or a newcomer, the club offers a warm welcome and a space to connect, celebrate, and contribute to the vibrant life of the village.
